Nigeria's war on SARS, protesters fight against the injustice.
SARS is an acronym for the special anti-robbery squad, it was established in 1992 as a response to the notorious Nigerian criminal Shina Rambo. SARS had the objectives of reducing crime such as armed robbery, firearm crimes, and kidnapping.
In 2010 with the rise of Nigerian scammers ‘Yahoo boys’, SARS began to harass and interrogate young numerous young, rich appearing Nigerians.
In 2017 Segan Awosanya started the #ENDSARS campaign and the movement formed in opposition to the police brutality, kidnapping, rape, unlawful arrests, and torture of innocent Nigerian citizens.
Just yesterday (13/10/20) BBC News Pidgin was live recording day 6 of an End SARS in Lagos.
Protests are crucial to fight back against the injustice as this is a human rights issue. A friend of mine living in Nigeria depicted SARS as ‘some security personals are maltreating and killing young youths for no apparent reason, accusing them of doing things without having truth.’
A close friend of one of my Nigerian friends was accused to be an internet fraudster and a cybercriminal by SARS without evidence. His friends described him as a computer geek but not a criminal. SARS confiscated his phone then had beaten him. His final consequence was unlawfully being told to pay 50,000 Naira (£100.73).
Every protest is not in vain as governors are beginning to join the movement, disbanded SARs officers have been barred from joining the new swat team ‘one of the criteria for the selection of SWAT officers stipulates that they must not have worked for SARS, according to a memo that was shared by the Nigeria(n) police force.’
